Simple Chunky Applesauce

There is nothing like going apple picking on a fall day with your family, but what to do with all those apples?  Try this recipe for Simple Chunky Applesauce.

Once the weather starts to cool off, my kids request our fall favorites, and homemade applesauce is at the top of the list.  My kids love to help prepare and, more importantly, eat this simple snack.  It’s a great way to spend time together as a family and learn some important life skills in the process.

For those who have never made homemade applesauce before, it is such an easy snack to make.  Yes, the peeling is a little tedious, but you can invest in a peeler or have your kids help if they are older.  Once in the pot, it just takes some time to cook.

If your kid doesn’t like chunky applesauce, blend the chunks out at the end.

A simple recipe to use apples from apple picking.

  • Apples (Macintosh, Honeycrisp, and Pink Lady are my favorites)

  • Water (Just enough to coat the bottom of the pan)

  • Ground Cinnamon (Measure to taste)

  • Sugar (Use only if apples are tart)

  • Peel and core apples

  • Dice apples

  • Place in the pot. Add water, cinnamon, and sugar if needed. Stir to coat the apples.

  • Bring to a boil.

  • Reduce to a simmer. Cover pot. Stir occasionally. Simmer for 30-60 minutes until apples are the right consistency for you.

  • If you prefer sauce without chunks, place it in a food processor or blender to puree.

  • Cool (hot applesauce will burn little mouths) and enjoy
